Abstract

I propose analyzing the transformation of the idea of literature in the context of the development of collective artistic practices (such as creative writing workshops and fan fiction) and the controversies surrounding the expansion of the definition of literature outside of its modern realm (Bob Dylan being awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in literature). By examining recent French literary works and practices, I contend that the deterministic, limited, and intransitive conception of literature has given way to open, inclusive, and transitive practices which generate new literary communities and sensibilities.
