Abstract

ABSTRACTThe germinal Une in Echinodermata: the origin and development of the germinal tissue in the course of gonadal regeneration in the sea-star Asterina Gibbosa PennAfter partial surgical removal of the genital apparatus in an interradial structure, the elements removed regenerate. This regeneration produces a migration of germinal cells from a reserve of gonocytes situated in the aboral sinus. When destroyed by irradiation, the reserve cannot regenerate, though somatic regeneration is still possible. These results seem to indicate that Asterina possesses a germinal line distinct from the somatic line. The developmental level of the germinal tissue in the regenerated gonad conforms to that of gonads which have followed their normal cycle. This development is not related to the existence of a privileged anatomical place in the genital apparatus.
