Abstract

This article explains the conflicting, yet central, position of the concept of freedom in the political thought of Francois Guizot. This is a limited freedom, faithful to the author’s misgivings about the freedom of the individual in the new contemporary society. We analyze how Guizot, in his purpose to clarify the unknown of freedom, reduces it dialectically to a limited freedom at the disposal of the elite of the capable.
