Abstract

The objective of this article is to analyse the influence of the «Russian factor» regarding the energy security of the European Union, in particular, it will focused on gas due to the fact that our Russian neighbour is its main gas supplier. On the one hand, the assessment will be carried out taking into account the complex relationship of Russia with the transit countries especially with Ukraine because of the annexation of Crime and the conflict in the Eastern side of the country. On the other hand, the consequences of these circumstances will be examined. Furthermore, it will be object of analysis the possible and feasible alternatives to this current situation, such as the diversification of the sources of supply and the intensification of the cooperation with other producers, being Central Asia and the Caucasus, as well as the Mediterranean, the primordial axis to reduce the dependency of Russia providing a higher energy security of the EU.
