Abstract

This article analyzes the educational debates that are held in the press in Latin America, given the importance they hold in communicating the ways to understand the history of education. Through the study of news media of different postures in different Latin American countries, the strength of the modern outlook in the second decade of the 21st century is shown. It analizes how aspects of education that are characteristic in the origins of modernity such as public education, freedom of education, gratuitousness, secularism, universality, meritocracy or national education continue to be actively debated in the press. It also contrasts the arguments of the various actors in conflict. With a sense of debt towards an inconclusive modernity or rather with the intent of raising the wager on modernity, the history of education is used in discussions to present promises of equality, justice and integration to the public opinion.
