Abstract

France and the Maghrib, by Paul-Marie de La Gorce For obvious historical, geographical and strategie reasons ineluding the human dimension, relations with the Maghrib countries are important to French foreign policy. They are marked by the different ways in which French political circles and public opinion view each of these countries as well as the differences in each regime and the ways in which their domestic policy has evolved. This is especially true of Algeria. The development of Algerian fundamentalism, the interruptions of the élections in January 1992, the harsh confrontations of the following years, French differences regarding the nature and the outecome of this crisis, the 16 November presidential elections — all these events coming after the enormous hope inspired by the events of 1988 have tested French North African policy.
