Abstract

End of Middle Palaeolithic and Beginning of Upper Palaeolithic in Greece : the Sequence of Cave 1 at Klissoura. The layers from the beginning of the Upper Palaeolithic and from the end of the Middle Palaeolithic which have been identified during new excavations in the Klissoura cave I (Argolid) are discussed in this paper. The beginning of the Middle Palaeolithic is represented by the Aurignacian from Layer IV, dated back to 32.000 BP and by an industry with blades/bladelets with curved back and geometric microliths from Layer V, dated back to 40.000 BP. The Mousterian sequence, undated so far, shows a microlithic character and a tool-kit rich in side-scrapers, poor in convergent tools and in Quina elements.
