Abstract

The woman is at the center of the riddle. She is evoked by her intimate parts and depicted at all stages of her life: young girl, girl, mother or co-wife. Female characters known in popular belief have also been addressed in some riddles. The speaker uses stylistic devices for these representations of the woman. The most common one is the metaphor, which is usually accompanied by other rethoric figures, including personification, antithesis and paradox. The use of such devices makes the text richer.
