Abstract

THE SOCIALIST FEDERATION OF THE ISÈRE SINCE 1969 : A CONTRIBUTION TO THE STUDY OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SOCIALIST PARTY JACQUES DERVILLE The Socialist Party in the Isère, as in the rest of France, has undergone sweeping changes in the past six years. Its numbers have increased fourfold, there are more women, its militants are younger, its social base has been diversified, new men have come to the forefront and there is greater capacity for militant action ; these are the indisputable signs. However, a more accurate analysis of the degree of commitment of new members shows that, striking though these transformations may be, they are also fragile. Above all, an analysis of the relationships of competition for power inside the Federation show that the « département » is split in two. Compared with socialism in the Grenoble region, which is mainly being adopted by the « new classes », is finding favour because of its refound militancy and is introducing power relations based more and more on competence, socialism in the northern part of the « département » admittedly seems revitalized, but also appears classic and very little removed from traditional socialism.
