Abstract
The study deals with the hydrographic expeditions to make maps of the Gulf of Mexico and the Antilles, organized by the Spanish navy at the end of the eighteenth century, within the framework of a program to confirm and recognize the Spanish American colonies in opposition to the other European powers, principally Great Britain. This expedition that traversed Venezuela, Colombia and Panama and its islands, as well as the Lesser Antilles, is less-known than that of Malaspina, but of equal importance, and produced an important cartographic documentation.
