Abstract

Thanks to the studies of Antonio Odriozola, wee know the editions of liturgical books for Spain and Portugal for the Xv and XVI centuries. For the Diocese of Calahorra-La Calzada we know four editions of the Missal between the years 1528 and 1554, three editions of the Breviary between 1505 and 1543, and an edition of the Holy Week Passion in 1531 and one edition in 1523 of the Manual for the administration of the sacraments. The present study offers a transcription of the manuscript text of the synod of 1539 celebrated in Logrono, which tells us interesting details of the edition of the four aforementioned liturgical books: the Missal, the Breviary, the Passion and the Manual which were edited in Logrono in the years 1531-32. The order was given to «call the printers of Valladolid and Zaragoza and Alcala to see who could print the best and at the most convenient price». The edition was finally entrusted to Miguel de Egufa who produced it in Logrono and who handed over a thousand bound exemplars of each of the four books and who «delivered one of each book to every church of the bishopric'. As well as these thousand copies of these four books, an indeterminate number of other «portable breviaries for those who wished to take theme» The quantity of a thousand copies of each book is significantly higher than the average of other editions known for other dioceses at that time. The number of copies has to be in relation to the number of churches and clerics. The economic cost involved must have been really significant. This brief study also discusses the possible existence of a separate edition of the diocesan calendar to which the transcribed synodal text makes an allusion.
