Abstract

The author goes through various etiologies of “paternal depression”: the reactualization of an archaic object relationship, the reactivation of the oedipal conflictuality and adolescent problems, the nature of the couple’s relationship, the paternal characteristics, the birth experienced as a traumatism, the vicissitudes of the links between a father and his child, and finally the trans-generational transmission. The author then develops on suggested preventive measures. Firstly, would be to work on identifying the symptoms of an antenatal paternal depression. Other preventive plans could follow, such as starting psychological guidance and being part of paternal support groups, specific training of maternity hospital staff as well as setting up various partnerships in maternity hospitals and with other mental health and infant professionals.
