Abstract
The EEC Directive 88/146 forbids the use of anabolic agents. Three years later, what’s the situation ? — What are the socio-economic effects of such a decision ? — Is it effective ? Are the controls efficient ? For the first point, the results are disastrous, specially in France. Commercial distorsions are increased. In fact, fraud is the rule. It is difficult to control the black market. So the Directive is not applied because it’s not applicable. Breeders have difficulties and consumers have no guarantee about the quality of beef meat.
