Abstract
The Emperor's New Clothes (1837) by Hans Christian Andersen, has a great similarity to one of the narratives of the Spanish writer Don Juan Manuel, author of El conde Lucanor, written between 1330 and 1335. Several scholars have described the similarities, but none has pointed out a clear textual relationship. It has been said that the Danish text borrows inspiration from the Hispanic narrative, but this explanation is vague for literary theory. This study examines the link between the two stories by making use of the theory of transtextuality by Gerard Genette.
