Abstract

This article seeks to analyze the role of women in the constitution of the modern city through Carmen de Burgos’ novel La rampa, written in 1917. The research focuses on public and private spaces where women try to experiment the city, despite the gender isolation and the patriarchal society restrictions. The city, in this case Madrid, will be the mirror of their experiences, the container of their hopes and the space where the struggle for gender equality takes place. Thus, the official map will be the personal cartography of their characters in a passionate defense of modernity.
