The authors indicates what were the basic epistemological principles used in the field of experimental sciences; he shows how this has lead to the definition of the randomised control trial, main reference of EBM. He then goes on to demonstrate how the recent developments in the field of cognitive sciences has allowed psychiatry to go beyond the historical splitting between explaining and understanding, between the search for signification and the search for causality.
