Abstract

Mediante documentación administrativa, y en el contexto de la chilenización de la región de Tarapacá y la nueva demarcación fronteriza entre Chile y Bolivia ocurrida entre las décadas de 1890 y 1920, en este artículo se describen y analizan tanto las dificultades que tuvieron en la zona del altiplano los campesinos-ganaderos aymaras para mantener tanto la propiedad y las modalidades de uso de sus recursos productivos, los dispositivos y acciones que emprendieron en su defensa, como las reacciones (algunas de ellas acentuadas más por elementos culturales que legales) de los funcionarios fiscales chilenos.

Introduction

In the context of the chilenization of the region of Tarapaca and the new demarcation of the border between Chile and Bolivia between the 1890s and the 1920s, this article describes and analyzes the difficulties faced by the aymara peasants to retain their property and the modes of use of their productive resources, the devices and actions they used to defend themselves, and the reactions (some accentuated more by cultural elements, rather than legal ones) of Chilean fiscal officers.
