Abstract

In this article we propose to study how the sacrament of confirmation was both understood and practised in the period of the evangelisation of America (16th century), extracting some lessons on how to understand and practice it in today's Church. The intention of the study is to demonstrate how, at any given moment in the life of the Church, we cannot «absolutise» any approach or praxis, ignoring the plurality of situations in which an «inculturating» application has been made; this is in answer to those who want to absolutise some as supposedly «more traditional».
