Abstract
The relevance of the theme of compassion and mercy has been renewed especially through the Pope’s gestures and attitudes that reflect God’s great compassion. By establishing the celebration of the World Day of the Poor, the Pope invites us to spread and institutionalize such gestures and attitudes since God’s response to the poor is always a saving act that heals wounds of body and soul. The Pope views his catechesis, audiences, apostolic journeys, greetings, diplomatic, apostolic, and interreligious meetings, discourses, and prayers for the victims of war, homilies and press conferences as opportunities to move the world to compassion and to remind people that God’s mercy is eternal. His approach to compassion and mercy, that is, an approach from the perspective of the merciful Samaritan, is intended to deepen and intensify our response to the missionary and compassionate vocation in following Jesus Christ, the Evangelizer of the poor.
