Abstract

The column offered by Mussolini to the city of Chicago in memory of Italo Balbo’s trans­oceanic flight symbolized the Fascist attempt to penetrate American society. Over the years, the monument has become a symbol of identity for the Italian-American community of the city. The article traces the history of the Balbo Monument from its origins to the recent protest for its removal, questioning the significance of its conservation to date.
