Abstract
We documented the actions and achievements of the Ichthyological Collection (CI) of the CentroInterdisciplinario de Ciencias Marinas, Instituto Politécnico Nacional (CICIMAR- IPN) during the last 18 years. In this period, the biological inventory was depurated, nomenclature was updated, and a digital database was developed and published online. Actions in the field of human resource training, lecturing, scientific research, extension and dissemination of research results are given in detail. The role of collections is discussed as wellas the current tendencies of the dissemination of scientific information from data bases.

Como resultado de estos apoyos institucionales, el acervo original de la Colección Ictiológica (CI) hasta el año de 1993 pasó de 25,000 ejemplares catalogados en 118 familias, 270 géneros, 400 especies y 2,500 registros, a más de 102,000 ejemplares en 6,694 registros curados a nivel 7 (e.g. Conocimiento y uso de la Biodiversidad (CONABIO)) hasta 2011 (Tabla 1)
Los esfuerzos de sistematización del acervo ictiológico de la Colección Ictiológica (CI) del CICIMAR-IPN, ahora se encaminan a diseminar su información en la directriz planteada por el consorcio Species 2000 (www.sp2000.org), la organización All Species Foundation (www.all-species.org) y la iniciativa del árbol de la vida (ToL) The Tree of Life Web Project (tolweb.org/tree/): crear una federación de bases de datos inter-operativas en línea, que documenten el conocimiento taxonómico y filogenético mundial
