Abstract
This text contains the written version of the speech delivered by the author on the occasion of his appointment as doctor honoris causa by the Rey Juan Carlos University in Madrid in May 2015. It defends vividly how the essential and fundamental justification of the University is to be the place where we seek and tell the truth and where science is done freely, without conditions or dependencies, out of pure love of truth, scientific discovery and the free dissemination of knowledge gained, undergoing serious and open debate.
