Abstract

The article focuses on the collection development policy statement, that, on the basis of an external (country and user profile) and of an internal evaluation (stock profile), sets out parameters for collection development and management in a library or in a library system. The first part of the article, after a brief presentation on the first reflections on collection development policy statement in the USA, offers a review of Italian studies on collection management and on the collection development policy statement. Then the paper illustrates the main changes that are involving the concept of library’s collection and of collection development and management; in conclusion it proposes a reflection on the function and contents of the collection development policy statement within the new scenario that is emerging.
