Abstract

Alberto Kurapel le Guanaco gaucho was born in 1946 in Santiago, Chile, and received a degree in theatre from the University of Chile in 1968. He worked with the University of Chile Theatre Institute and as an actor on radio and television until he emigrated to Canada following the 1973 coup d’état. In 1981 he founded La Compagnie des Arts Exilio in Montreal. Breaking cultural barriers, his works are noted for their striking imagistic performances and their deep commitment to freedom and justice in art and life. His plays have been seen at various festivals in Montreal, Cape Breton, France, Argentina, Peru, Washington, D.C. and, in 1992, in Chile. Four volumes of his theatre work have been published by Editions Humanitas / nouvelle optic.
