Abstract
En 1578, Lima había construido un sistema de distribución de agua que acercaba las aguas de un manantial a la ciudad. La algarabía ante la llegada del agua de boca a la Plaza Mayor no duró mucho, pues a la par surgieron problemas económicos, técnicos y sanitarios que las autoridades trataron de solucionar, mientras el sistema se ampliaba a los barrios de la ciudad. La disponibilidad de agua de boca en fuentes públicas y privadas significaba poder y prestigio para la ciudad y sus vecinos.
