Abstract

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons play a critical role in the treatment of cleft lip and palate deformities. There are many controversies in the literature pertaining to different treatment modalities. This includes efficacy of presurgical orthopedic appliances, primary gingivoperiosteoplasty, the effect of different palatal repair techniques on speech production, the timing of alveolar bone grafting, and the role of distraction osteogenesis in this patient population. This eye-opener will explore these topics through a review of the pertinent literature.
