Abstract This paper presents high-resolution multitransition observations of CO, 13CO, C18O, DCO+, H13CO+, SO and NH3 from a dense molecular core, L1689N, in the ρ Oph molecular complex. This region contains a dense cold clump, an adjacent infrared source (IRAS 16293-422) in a distinct warmed clump, and a striking bipolar mass outflow region, probably associated with the infrared source. Both clumps appear to have evolved gravitationally under the influence of the local magnetic field, since they are elongated perpendicular to the field direction inferred from optical polarization measurements toward nearby stars. The mass outflow, however, appears to have a misaligned component, skewed 50° to the local magnetic-field direction, perhaps owing to deflection of the flow by the cold clump.
