Abstract

There has been since 1981 much new blood among RPR militants, mobilized by opposition to the government of the Left. These militants continue to refer symbolically to Gaullism, but their ideological universe has shifted towards economie liberalism. At the sarne time, they proclaim their affiliation to the right and consider their UDF allies as centrists, thereby stressing the difference. The party appears divided concerning its relations with the Front national but more tolerant towards it than in 1978. The dominant image of the RPR is one of dynamism and responsibility whereas, that of the UDF is negative, that of a diffuse nebula of bad partners.
