Abstract
The establishment of Francesco Datini’s «Ceppo pe’ poveri di Cristo» holds various meanings for the history of Prato in a long span of time. As charitable organization of extraordinary relevance and gift-giver of donations to the poor, the Ceppo entered also the wheat market and became a sponsor of various public works and artworks. Thanks to the Ceppo Datini, charities based in Prato reached a relevant portion in the context of the same Tuscany in terms of both the dimension of their landed properties and the amount of services in comparison to the population. By using the sources stored in the Archive Datini and in the Ceppo’s Archive it is possible to understand the plan and the making of a ramarkable example of late medieval welfare, which operated as socio-economic facilitator in the Prato of that time.
