Abstract

Mooren´s ulcer is a rare form of peripheral corneal ulceration. The ulcer originates from an inflammatory infiltrate involving the limbal cornea. The disease spreads circumferentially, resulting in ulceration that progresses around the limbo and then centrally. Treatment is based on local steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and conjunctival resection, amniotic membrane transplant and, in patients with severe perforation, on lamellar corneo-scleral transplant and appropriate immunosuppressive therapy. We here report the case of a male patient aged 55 years with nasal corneal ulceration involving the limbus. Ulceration extended circumferentially and centrally and was complicated by a perforation measuring 2.5 mm in vertical diameter with iris hernia. Possible causes of vasculitis were eliminated. The diagnosis Mooren´s ulcer was made. The patient received bolus application of corticosteroids and was referred for lamellar corneo-scleral transplant.
