Abstract

Cyzicus struck his last provincial coins with Greek inscriptions during the reign of Claudius Gothicus. The mint became at the same time an important imperial mint, the only one in Asia Minor. The new Moneta was established by the transfer of a mint of Asia Minor, created by Gallienus and probably located in Smyrna. The existence of a transitional issue is here analyzed : these coins keep some characteristics of the previous mint but with a new style. Coins of the following issue bear on their reverse the mint-mark M C, and record the official opening of the mint as well as the beginning of the Gothic war. A corpus of these coins is given.
