Abstract
Corinne Pré : Comic opera at the court of Louis XVI. From 16th December 1774 to 29th May 1789, nearly 550 comic operas were mounted in the different court theatres of Versailles, Fontainebleau during the hunting season, and Choisy. This profusion reflected royal tastes, and particularly those of the Queen. Performances were sumptuous with abundant and varied decors and accessories kept in the storerooms of the ' Menus Plaisirs ' or made especially for the occasion, luxurious costumes and ballets danced by the best members of the Opera. The comic opera was also the favourite genre of the troupe of the nobles in which the Queen, the Comte d'Artois and intimate friends acted. The operas chosen show a preference for sentimentality, parody and light entertainment.
