Abstract

RÉSUMÉ We propose to pay homage to the memory of Michael Herslund by trying to solve an enigma posed by the study of cataphoric demonstrative noun phrases: why is it not possible to have as a subsequent of a cataphoric demonstrative a segment that refers to an entity of the 1st order, whereas such a reference is allowed if it is anaphoric? In other words, why don’t we have the cataphoric correspondent (2) of the anaphoric sequence (1): (1) Il n’avait plus confiance en Philippe. Ce copain d’enfance n’a jamais répondu à ses appels à l’aide (2) ?? Il retrouva ce copain : Philippe. The answer to this question is provided by the unexpected connection between cataphoric demonstratives and ostensive demonstratives.
