Abstract

A painting of Pompei discovered in front of a tavern shows a donkey, crowned by a victory, copulating with a lion. The signification of this scene in sexual context is disturbing because she is considered as an unicum : political sense as Minervini argued ? Picture of a lost fable ? Two aspects must be considered : a roman lamp shows the same picture and a pun in Martial’s writings use the word leo to describe woman sex. This picture does suggest that the sexual performance of the donkey is the only wellknown quality of this beast for ancient people.
