Abstract
This article aims at exploring the emergence of the syncretism present participle / gerund in Middle English during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. By examining the Helsinki Corpus, we shall try to understand how and why the replacing of a phonetic form by another one and the integration into the verbal paradigm of a nominal form in -ing were brought about by a set of interrelated factors.
