Abstract

The paper investigates the link between inward FDI and local development in Italy. The empirical analysis is based on a new firm-level dataset built by the author through survey interviews. A multiple-choice questionnaire was sent to all the multinational enterprises (MNE) members of the Confindustria Foreign Investors Committee (Comitato Investitori Esteri) in the period September-November 2009. The 77% response rate enabled the author to document the experience of 23 MNE with local affiliates in Italy. Particular focus is placed on the strategic drivers of internationalization and the contribution of inward FDI on local income and the accumulation of capital, technology and human assets.
