Abstract

Development of and Outlook for the Crisis in Indonesia, by Alain Dichant Indonesia is in transition. Due to the repercussions of financial crisis in Southeast Asia, the Indonesian economie and social System is revealing its weakness, and should no longer survive. After 52 years of independence, and more than 30 years of political dictate, Indonesia is going to change its economie and social structures. The regional economie crisis has underlined the limits of Mr Suharto's New Order based on nepotism, corruption and the development of conglomerates. A new period is predictable with the decline of state interventionism in the financial and industrial sectors. The first priority will be to implement constitutional reforms for new presidential elections. Only after that, confidence might corne back and the economie reforms progress. The success of Indonesia's transformation is one of the most important challenges for the South Asia-Pacific area in the coming years.
