Abstract

• Franz Cumont published in 1940 an erotic funerary monument. This provides the occasion to examine the attitude of the scientific comunity, during the first half of the XXth century, towards erotic art and its historical meaning. Through the study of different publications and pieces of Cumont's scientific correspondence, we focus on his specific attitude and its evolution from the beginning of the century till his death (1947) in order to understand Cumont's conception of the historian's profession.
