Abstract

At first the hydroclimatical frame will be briefly recalled and, in particular, the fossil groundwater resources will be pointed out. The geological and geomorphological units are summarized. The main aim of the paper concerns the description of the main acquifers and their characteristics. A particular attention is given to the acquifers located in the Precambrian basement, the “Continental intercalaire” (=Nubian sandstones) and the “Continental terminal”, which are the most extended and the thickest. The occurence of complex hydraulic systems within some sedimentary areas is underlined, as well as the preponderance of hydrothermalism in other regions. Both the water quality and resources are also discussed. As a conclusion, we recommend the establishment of experimental stations.
