Abstract

Starting from a geography of the intimate based on a re-reading of the philosophical concept of dwelling, we must comprehend the different emotional notes that surfers experience through contact with the wave. The major issue consists of finding out whether the ways of institutionalization of the surfing territories are compatible with the surfers’ existential ways of being in the world, which are made possible by the act of sliding, understood as the use of the body as an ontological effector. Next, it is about apprising policy makers of the probable limits inherent in the development of surfing based merely on the sports organization of the seaside areas of the Aquitaine coastline, considered as a way of reviving tourism along this coastal fringe. Finally, avenues for research open up in order to interpret the protests and opposition that the surfers could employ in reply to the marketing and promotion of their sports culture.
