Abstract
The advantages of the natural conditions offered in what today is called Lorient, in part because of its situation in the South of Brittany, and also because of the characteristics of the bay, which were factors that favourably contributed to the construction of the first port installations of the Indian Oriental Company, also from the very start the comercial function and natural construction accompanied the military function. The fact that has many different functions has been a rule in what is now the long history of the port of Lorient, and in the present time, the varied make up of the port is a consequence of the up to dateness of the military, fishery, and comercial functions as well as sporting divertions, which it possesses. Especially in the three first mentioned aspects, the port of Lorient gives us a view and a distribution of open spaces with great originality, because it is rarely possible to find together an important submarine base and a National Marine arsenal, a fishing port, which is one of the first in France in tonnage of fish captured and a comercial port, which, thank's to the demand of its hinter-land, and to its up to dateness, its traffic has augmented, and it has converted, among the Freeh ports, in the first importer of raw material for the manufacture of feeding for cattle.
