Abstract

Teaching the Holocaust in Jewish schoolsTeaching the Holocaust in Jewish schools is as difficult a task as it is in the regular French public schools. One must also bear in mind the fact that Jewish schools are highly heterogeneous and, to some extent, an insular universe. After a long period of avoidance, in which the Holocaust was considered a non-event, Jewish schools have now gradually developed their own educational Holocaust-teaching tools, all the while being careful to circumvent the complicated issue of God in relation to the Holocaust. Every student is duty bound not only to remember (Zachor – a Jewish diktat) but also to cultivate a heightened awareness of current moods in both the Jewish and non-Jewish worlds. The existing challenge facing Jewish schools in France today is to abandon their traditional particularism and to take a greater interest in general current affairs.
