Abstract

The transcontinental expedition of Lewis and Clark, as the first step of America’swestward expansion, was set within the framework of Jefferson’s project for an •empire of liberty”, or •for” liberty. The phrase itself gives insights into the tensions of Jefferson’sdiscourse, tensions that are detected in the policy of the Jefferson administration, regarding Indian lands and slavery. The influence of this founding paradox is still to be felt today.
