Abstract

The Catholic Church and the North-South Dialogue, by Philippe Laurent Since the beginning of the 60s, the Catholic Church took part in researches on the North-South relations. In 1961 the encyclical letter "Maeter et Magistra" points out the new disparities resulting of the economic growth. In 1967 Paul VI's text "The people's development", the Church turns her attention to the problem of international trade and of the "research of fairness in international relations". Interested in all the fields where international justice is in play and conscious that the whole economic order has to be transformed the Catholic Church intends to make major choices: rejoin the poorest among the poor people, seek for peace - "development is the new name for peace" -, give the first place to Men, standing out for the distinction between economic growth and human development. Thanks to her transnational organisation and her hierarchical structure, the presence and the means of action of the Church in the North-South dialogue are manifold and various.
