Abstract
The debate on the primacy or secundarity of writing is entrenched in the opposition of nature vs culture. This opposition is the background of an analysis of some features of written language. Then we come to the core of the discussion on the basis of Vachek's works : we deal with the differentiation and complementariness of written and spoken language, we mention the provocative hypothesis of the primacy of writing, and finally we suggest that writing is an obligatory starting point for the development of linguistic science. The end of the paper is dedicated to some guiding assumptions for research, such as the social character of language, the centrality of writing for cognition, the influence of computer on writing.
