Abstract

Abstract — In 1578, Henri Ш opened a new mint in Amiens with a view to improving the coinage in circulation in the frontier province of Picardy. Under Louis XIV, the French frontier shifted further north and the mint gradually declined until its output ceased de facto around 1755. Coin production stopped for good in 1772 and only the mint's legal function was maintained up until the Revolution. A detailed study of the various surviving archives makes it possible to gain a better understanding of the life and issues of the mint between 1578 and 1772.
