Abstract
The enzymic conversion of l-arabinose to both l-ribulose and l-xylulose by the formation of an intermediate, l-arabitol, has been observed in cell-free extracts of Penicillium chrysogenum. All enzymic products involved in these enzymic steps have been isolated and characterized. This finding emphasizes a common enzymic sequence for the initiation of pentose metabolism by this mold.
