Abstract

Learning Anglo-American Idioms through CAI : the IDIOMS program The choice of English-American idioms as the content of a CAI (computer-assisted instruction program) is explained, as well as the population it is aimed at, and the type of idioms selected for study (there are 60 idioms in the program). Then the structure of the program is described : the acquisition phase by means of Multiple Choice Questions and use of the idioms in context, followed by the recall phase, which is a game. The learner is required to answer in a variety of ways : filin, free answer, true-false, pick-out answer, watching sentence combining. Emphasis is laid on the relative freedom and constraints imposed on the learner ; lastly the importance of graphics to "trigger" the understanding of the metaphoric sense of the idioms is stressed, as well as the hope of integrating digitized speech into the program.
