Abstract

Anaesthetists are increasingly asked to provide sedation or general anaesthesia outside the traditional operating room environment for non-surgical procedures, especially for paediatric patients. Because of our expertise in patient evaluation, monitoring, drug selection, and a unified approach to the needs of sedated/anaesthetized patients, anaesthetists are able to provide superior conditions for a variety of painful or uncomfortable procedures. Physicians responsible for cardiac catheterization, MRI examinations, invasive radiography, emergency room care, and many other procedures have found anaesthetists to be a valuable resource for both clinical service and advice about reasonable alternatives to sedation and general anaesthesia. This talk will discuss some of the practical aspects of anaesthesia outside the operating room and suggest approaches for ensuring both safe and timely care.
