Abstract

Is Southern Africa a region and which are its limits ? This text is a geographical analysis of this vast area, its unity and diversity. Two main aspects are examined. Firstly the role of the mining industry in unifying what we define (in francophone literature) as Southern Africa. Secondly the urban geography of the region which is here exemplified by a case-study of Mandeni (Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa) which reveales the urban legacy of apartheid. The background question is the spatial recomposition of the region since 1994 and the fall of the apartheid regime in South Africa.
